In October 1999, the cumulative effects of
hurricanes Dennis, Floyd and Gert
destroyed about one-fifth of this 800-foot
pier next to the Hatteras Island Resort.
Weakened by the loss of pilings, the entranceway building also collapsed. But rebuilding efforts quickly followed and the pier was back open, 24 hours a day, in June. The pier house, which was also destroyed by a storm in 1973, is larger at 40 by 80 feet including an air-conditioned game room. Locals agree that this pier, also known just as the "Rodanthe pier," is a top spot for landing king mackerel. All-day fishing for adults is $6, and kids' and seniors' all-day passes are $5. Weekly passes are $30. Sightseeing passes are $1
